Spencer Kobren Interviews Dr. Jerry Cooley About ACell MatriStem

Friday, 18 August 2017 20:11

The Bald Truth has just published an exclusive audio interview with ISHRS president, Dr. Jerry Cooley. Spencer Kobren interviews Dr. Cooley about the groundbreaking product, Acell MatriStrem. It seems this is the topic that is on everyone's mind lately. This may just be the product that changes the face of hair loss and hair restoration forever.

Jerry Cooley, MD: I started working with this wound healing product about a year and half ago, and initially got some promising results. It’s taken me definitely some time to understand it and understand what worked well and what didn’t, as well as just to see long term results. One of the things I’ve been doing in the last few months is just making a real concerted effort to bring people back in, which is not really that easy, but just to really look very closely at my results and I’ve just gotten that much more excited about it.

New Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant Instrument Unveiled

Friday, 18 August 2017 20:11

Follicular Unit ExtractionFollicular Unit Extraction (FUE) focuses on the targeted removal of follicular unit grafts without the use of a scalpel or sutures. Considered to be a less invasive procedure than traditional strip harvesting, some people have touted FUE as the holy grail of surgical hair restoration since its introduction to North America in 1999.  However, variants of the original procedure known as the Woods Technique, named after pioneer Australian hair transplant surgeon Dr. Ray Woods, have proven to be less successful than hoped. Many physicians and patients were disappointed with the results of early FUE procedures, which has given FUE the reputation of being a hit or miss alterative to the time tested and proven success of traditional of state of the art hair transplantation.

IAHRS Member Dr. Alan Feller is one of the early adapters of the FUE technique and one of the most vocal concerning its shortcomemmings.  Feller has repeatedly warned physicians and prospective patients about the three detrimental forces that are unique to FUE hair transplantation. 1. Torsion 2. Traction 3. Compression

After years of clinical research Dr. Alan Feller believes he has solved these problems and has introduced a new FUE extracting tool to the hair restoration community.

What To Ask Your Surgeon

Friday, 18 August 2017 20:11

As a prospective hair transplant patient you have the right to ask as many questions as you believe necessary to be well informed about both the procedure and the surgeon who you are considering. Remember, whomever you choose to perform your  hair transplant surgery should have your best interest in mind, so if you feel uncomfortable in anyway choose another surgeon.

A Prospective Patient has the right to:

  • A hair transplant surgeon who is experienced and knowledgeable and someone who makes you feel at ease during every aspect of the process.
  • As many in person or online consultations as needed until all of your questions have been sufficiently answered.
  • To bring an objective third party, such as a spouse, sibling or friend into the consultation.
  • A through explanation of the physician's surgical plan provided in writing upon request. This written plan should include the number of sessions needed to achieve the desired result, the cost per graft, the surgical design as well as any specific issues that might be addressed during surgery.
  • Meet with and speak with your surgeon during a consultation prior to the day of your surgery.
  • Read the surgical consent form prior to the day of your surgery to decide if you are comfortable with its contents.

Questions to ask:

  • How long have you be performing hair transplant surgery and how many cases do you perform each year?
If the physician is relatively new to the field you'll want to make sure the they've performed 100 cases or more at minimum.
  • What type of training have you had, and how long did you train before starting your own practice?
Again if the physician has been in practice for less than 2-3 years you'll want someone who trained for a minimum of a year before starting their own practice.
  • What interested about performing  hair transplant surgery?
While there might not be any right or wrong answer, the response should offer some insight of the physician’s motivation and personality.
  • Which surgical hair restoration conferences and symposiums do you attend to stay current in the field?
The majority of the well respected members of the field will usually attend at least one conference per year of either The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery or The European Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. There are a few great surgeons who choose not to attend for various reasons, so you should feel free to ask why.
  • What is your primary surgical orientation: Follicular unit transplantation with Follicular unit extraction(FUE) when indicated, or mini/micrograting?
The answer should be follicular unit transplantation and FUE.
  • Can I meet with a couple of your patients who have similar hair characteristics and hair loss pattern as mine before making my decision?
    The Answer should be yes.
  • Are you a recommended member of The International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons?
The answer should be yes and verifiable through http://www.iahrs.org
  • Are you recommended by The American Hair Loss Association?
The answer should be yes and verifiable through http://www.americanhairloss.org  and by seeing an “AHLA  Verified “seal found on the physician’s website.
